THE TRAGEDY OF UNDERUTILIZED RESOURCES

Just look around and think - what a waste of resources everywhere! Time, effort, money, ideas, expertise, experience, talents, materials, space - so much potential is lost because these precious resources are not utilized properly.

The scientist or researcher spending hours searching for the proper reference article, the experienced contractor or technician looking for work, millions of people spending hours every day in their daily commute to and from work, thousands of businesses looking for customers or suppliers, there are so many examples of waste of human time and expertise. Then there are the lands, buildings, and other spaces, and resources like machinery, which are used only part of the day or in particular seasons. How much more could we  produce if these resources are used optimally!

We live at a time when there is so much knowledge and information available. How to cure diseases, hou to grow bumper crops, how to manage organizations better, how to detect and stop crime. But so much of this knowledge is not readily available, hidden away in inaccessible books and journals or deep in organizations. So people have to search for the information again, or recreate it from scratch. What a waste!

We are not using all the resources available to us for improving life. There is an abundance of natural and human resources which remain unexploited or underutilized. Millions of potential watts of energy is lost every day in the sunlight over the deserts, in flowing rivers or ocean tides and in the blowing winds. Huge mineral deposits remain to be mined in remote areas. Land, wind, water, sunlinght, minerals, flora and fauna - all can be used in a better way to enhance our lives here.

Look at the enormous waste of human resources. Billions of humans are unemployed or underemployed, wasting their precious physical and mental resources. People doing ordinary, routine things every day, repeating past mistakes, searching for solutions to already solved problems, losing time due to inefficient systems, poor communication and lack of tools.

Science and technology have already provided us with many tools to mould our future. We are simply not using these tools enough. This website is meant to point out some ways this can be done, to stimulate discussion and thought, and to provoke action.

Have your say

What resources do you see around you which are being wasted or unutilized? How can these be used?

What technology is available to make the best use of resources? Make your comments or link the web-sites with us.

Some examples: scheduling programs, optimization software, routing programs, knowledge transfer websites, knowledge management techniques, discussion groups, discussion web-sites, search engines, job-sites, books, organizations.

Some examples

Unemployed or underemployed people; people between jobs; people looking for work (besides the unemployed, I'm also thinking of contractors, independent workers and self-employed people looking for their next job); people who have retired early.

Highly trained people doing routine drudge work which could be done with less training; such people doing routine work around the house (cooking, cleaning, washing, repair and maintenance, grocery shopping etc.); people searching for products, comparing prices, etc.; people spending several hours commuting each day.

Information not accessible to people who need it, making them unproductive, delaying progress and hindering growth; scientists and researchers spending hours or days searching for already published information; doctors in developing countries not getting information about new cures; farmers not getting information about the weather, soil, fertilizer or other factors which affect crops; construction workers not getting information about better techniques.

Businesses looking for customers, suppliers, employees and partners; billions of dollars spent on unfocused or inefficient marketing; best practices not being shared.

Office and school buildings used only part of the day; idle machinery, equipment or production capacity in factories or with service providers; vacant lots, empty apartments, unplanted agricultural land.

Expertise not getting transferred to those who need it; expert knowledge remaining in the heads of experts or being communicated only locally.

Millions of watts of sunlight falling on empty deserts; wind and water power not being harnessed.
